Recently, after a couple years away from the game, I decided to play some Battlefield2 again. I figured that now that I have the new bad assed machine, I'd see how the game runs.
This is how things went:
Installation of BF2: 10 minutes.
Patches: 10 minutes of browsing, 4 hours to DL.
Installation of patches: 5+ minutes.
Started game.
Intro videos/legal: 5 minutes.
Redirect to website to DL new content: 10 minutes.
Installation of new content: 5 minutes.
Started game.
Intro videos/legal: 5 minute wait.
Adjusted video settings.
Kicked from game to apply settings.
Started game.
Intro videos/legal: 5 minutes.
Joined match.
Loading assets: 3 minutes.
Game starts.
Computer freezes.
Hard reboot, 2 minutes.
Browse, DL and install new video drivers: 15 minutes.
Restart game.
Intro videos/legal: 5 minutes.
Joined match.
Loading assets: 3 minutes.
Game starts.
Computer freezes.
Hard reboot: 2 minutes.
Disable SLI mode.
Reboot computer: 2 minutes.
Find intro videos/legal files on disc and rename in order to disable: 5 minutes.
Restart game.
Joined match.
Loading assets: 3 minutes.
Game starts.
Computer freezes.
Give up and go to bed.
That's almost 5.5 hours of messing around, before I gave up! It took me another 2 nights of troubleshooting drivers and hardware before I was able to play.
Compare this to my Halo3 experience on the Xbox360:
Insert disc: 2 seconds
Intro videos/legal: 30 seconds
Start game.
Console gaming FTW.
In goes the disc, out comes the fun.

I would have gave up at the 21 minute mark... as soon as I saw it was going to take 4 hrs. to download.
